Ash Wednesday and Lent

Ash Wednesday is an important day for all Christians. The canons of the Church of England make it one of very few days (with Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, Ascension Day) when church members most definitely should be at worship. There are three opportunities to worship at Heavitree:

9.30am at St Michael’s

noon at St Lawrence’s

7.30pm at St Michael’s.

All three Eucharists will include the ceremonies of ashes.

During Lent we shall have an emphasis on prayer. Prayer is one of the three topics the Bishop of Exeter had set for his diocese (together with making new disciples and serving the people of Devon with joy.)

The first thing will be a morning of prayer on Saturday 17th February. There will be a Mass at 9.30am and then the church will be open until noon; silent prayer in the Lady Chapel (where the Blessed Sacrament will be on the altar) and some prayer activities (including some for children) in the body of the church. Come and go as you please – but do come at some stage!

Prayer is for everyone, not just a holy few.
