St Mary Steps is one of the oldest churches in the city, dating back to medieval times. Its atmosphere reflects the centuries of worship and prayer that has made this building special – mystery and sanctity flow out of the stones. A church to delight romantics and traditionalists.
St Mary Steps is a centre of traditional liturgy in Exeter, in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. The Mass is sung to Merbecke, and Evensong is chanted according to the Book of Common Prayer. The congregation is small in number but diverse, and always pleased to welcome new people and visitors.
As the name suggests, there are a number of steps involved and, sadly, the church is not accessible for those unable to climb stairs.
